NEW JERSEY. April 6, 2023 (Biz Republic) — Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) announced more than $2.5 million in National Science Foundation (NSF) funding to support five Rowan University studies and ensure that South Jersey remains a national leader in higher education and medical research and development.

Rowan faculty will receive awards through the NSF Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER), one of the foundation’s most prestigious awards for early-career faculty. The three CAREER awards include $698,684 to use computing to study cellular functions, $512,890 to study stem cells, and $520,000 to identify and detail how pathogenic plant bacteria grow and transform from the host plant into soil.

“South Jersey researchers make incredible breakthroughs every day, and this federal funding will continue to support the important work they do,” Rep. Norcross said. “Investing in our community provides more opportunities, spurs economic growth, and aids the development of cutting-edge technologies and advancements for our country and the world. I am proud to support the great work being done by South Jersey’s students and researchers. I will continue working to make South Jersey the capital of higher education and medical research and development in North America.”

The Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine received $699,997 to study neurological processes and provide a training platform for the next generation of neuroscientists in South Jersey. The NSF also awarded a standard grant of $174,693 for Rowan researchers to study graph mining on graphic processing units (GPU) related to big data and parallel computing.

“Rowan University researchers are developing critical breakthroughs and discoveries that make a difference in people’s lives,” said Rowan University Provost Tony Lowman. “Grants from the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies are necessary for continuing this work, especially now as we rapidly expand our research endeavors. We are grateful to Congressman Norcross for supporting legislation to fund these initiatives.”
