Just a few days until the Democratic Primary, Matos leads the crowded field with 22% of the vote, besting nearest competitor Aaron Regunburg who polls second with 9% support. The rest of the field comes in far behind with mid-to-low single-digit support.

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island. June 21, 2023 (Biz Republic) — Lt. Governor Sabina Matos’ campaign for Congress released a memo detailing the findings of a new poll that shows Sabina with a commanding, double-digit lead in the special primary election for Rhode Island’s First Congressional District. Just a few days until the Democratic Primary, Matos leads the crowded field with 22% of the vote, besting nearest competitor Aaron Regunburg who polls second with 9% support. The rest of the field comes in far behind with mid-to-low single-digit support.

The poll was conducted June 5-8 by Pete Brodnitz of Expedition Strategies. Brodnitz has extensive experience polling in Rhode Island, including successful campaigns for Governor Gina Raimondo, Attorney General Peter Neronha, and Sabina’s own successful 2022 campaign for Lieutenant Governor.

“I first decided to get into this race, thanks to an outpouring of calls and support from voters across Rhode Island, encouraging me to run. There’s so much at stake – abortion rights, protecting our democracy, housing costs, and keeping our community safe from guns,” said Lt. Governor Sabina Matos. “These are exactly the issues I’ve been working on for more than a decade in public leadership and I’m grateful that voters have confidence in me to continue working on their behalf. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and use my experience to fight for the people of Rhode Island’s First District in Congress.”

“These results are affirmation that Sabina Matos is the commanding frontrunner for Rhode Island’s First District special election. Even in a crowded field, this poll confirms that voters recognize Sabina’s record of leadership and experience on the issues that matter most to Rhode Island families. We look forward to continuing to connect with voters to earn their support in the final weeks of this campaign,” said Brexton Isaacs, campaign manager for Sabina Matos.

MEET SABINA MATOS

Democrat Sabina Matos has the experience and track record that Rhode Islanders need in Congress. As a community leader, President of the Providence City Council, and now as Rhode Island’s Lieutenant Governor, Sabina Matos has a well-earned reputation for getting things done. From her work to lower costs and make housing more affordable, to working to reduce gun violence and make our communities safer, to defending reproductive rights and our personal freedoms. We need her leadership in Congress to get things done for Rhode Island.

Like many Rhode Islanders, Sabina knows what it’s like to work hard and, at times, struggle to make ends meet. Immigrating to the United States from the Dominican Republic at the age of 20 and determined to secure the American dream, Sabina worked at a clothing factory before moving to Providence – where she learned English while working in a jewelry factory. Sabina graduated from Rhode Island College, and became deeply involved in her community working to do something about the high cost of housing. In 2010 as a young mom, Sabina ran for and was elected to the Providence City Council. During her campaign, Sabina remembers being asked why a mom with young kids would run for office. Her response: “Why not?”

Sabina served 10 years on the Council, championing an agenda to make life better for all of us. Her initiatives took direct aim at the barriers facing Providence households: building housing that hard-working Rhode Islanders can afford, supporting women leaders, and protecting reproductive freedom. Since 2021, Sabina has served as Rhode Island’s Lieutenant Governor, where she’s advocated to expand voting rights and for stronger gun safety legislation to protect our communities. She’s worked closely with the McKee Administration to make historic investments in addressing our climate crisis and affordable housing and been a consistent champion for women and to protect reproductive freedom. Sabina and her husband live in Providence with their two children.
