The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey: $619,500 in grants to 12 non-profit organizations

Community FoodBank of New Jersey, in Hillside, received a $100,000 grant to support a pilot project that addresses obesity in Newark by providing access to fresh, healthy foods for families and children.

NEW JERSEY. May 14, 2020 (Biz Republic) — Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, through its philanthropic arm, The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, issued $619,500 in grants to 12 non-profit organizations for health and cultural programs throughout New Jersey for the first quarter of 2020. The Foundation’s mission is to support organizations that make New Jersey healthier. The grantees included:

Community FoodBank of New Jersey, in Hillside, received a $100,000 grant to support a pilot project that addresses obesity in Newark by providing access to fresh, healthy foods for families and children. The grant also provides support for the Community Foodbank of New Jersey’s COVID-19 state-wide response efforts.

Community Foundation of New Jersey, in Morristown, received a $25,000 grant to support the Newark Youth Summer Employment Program, which offers work experience, teaches employment skills and financial literacy, and provides Newark youth with a summer income.

Community Foundation of New Jersey, in Morristown, received a $75,000 grant to support Branch Brook Park Alliance’s Care of the Park Program. The program provides physical activity, fitness and nutrition education opportunities at Branch Brook Park in Newark.

Community in Crisis, in Liberty Corner, received a $50,000 grant to support their Community Hub which provides community-level opioid prevention education programming as well as recovery support and referral services.

George Street Playhouse, in New Brunswick, received a $82,500 grant to support the production of Anytown, a musical drama for students in grades 7-12, that focuses on the challenges and consequences of opioid abuse and its impact on teens and families.

Jewish Family Service of Atlantic and Cape May Counties, in Margate City, received a $60,000 grant to support the Wellness Network, a program that promotes care access and patient adherence to improve health outcomes for Atlantic County residents. The grant also provides support for their COVID-19 response efforts.

Newark School of the Arts, in Newark, received a $10,000 general operating support grant to fund the school’s music, dance, drama and visual arts classes and performances.

New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute, in Princeton, received a $72,000 grant to support the Conversation of Your Life (COYL) program, which provides mayors and community partners with tools to develop a community conversation around end-of-life care planning in a culturally sensitive and accessible way.

New Jersey Repertory Company, in Long Branch, received a $10,000 general operating support grant to provide opportunities for children and their families to learn about and experience the theater.

Rutgers University Foundation, in New Brunswick, will serve as the fiscal agent for a $100,000 grant to support the Rutgers New Jersey Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health’s New Jersey Healthy Kids Initiative, which aims to improve child health by conducting evidence-based research, education, and practice in nutrition and physical activity.

Save Latin America, in Union City, received a $15,000 grant to support the Diabetes Outreach Program, which serves under-served individuals who have been identified as at-risk for or have diabetes. The program provides relevant health education on diabetes, as well as linkages to diabetes treatment and management.

Symphony in C, in Collingswood, received a $20,000 general operating support grant to fund educational outreach programming.
